Plywood vs MDF kitchen cabinets Dubai: a maker's view

October 23, 2026 · 7 min readPlywood vs MDF kitchen cabinets Dubai: a maker's view

Most kitchens we build in DAMAC Hills 1 use both boards. Plywood goes where water lives: the base under the sink, the dishwasher housing, units against an external wall. MR or HMR MDF goes into doors, tall boxes and painted panels, where a flat face matters more than screw-holding. The board inside the box decides how the kitchen ages. The door decides how it looks.

The carcass and the shutter are two separate decisions

Buyers compare plywood and MDF as though a kitchen is made of one material. It is not. The carcass is the box: two sides, a base, a top rail, a back panel and shelves. The shutter, or door, is the face you touch. They are usually different boards with different finishes, and drawer boxes are a third spec again.

That matters at quote stage, because a supplier can quote a plywood carcass with a painted MDF door and describe the whole thing as plywood cabinets. Nothing false in it, but you still do not know which board sits in which box. We build to measure in our own workshop, so moving a carcass from chipboard to plywood changes cutting, edge banding and the hardware fixing pattern together. You can see kitchens we built and fitted in Dubai and look at the boxes rather than the doors.

Plywood, marine ply and BS 1088

Plywood is veneers glued in crossed layers. That cross-grain build gives stiffness, decent screw-holding and better resistance to racking than a plain particle board. Water resistance sits in the glue line, not in the wood. Interior ply uses a urea glue that gives up once it stays damp. WBP ply uses a phenolic glue and holds far better.

Marine ply to BS 1088 is a specific certified board: marine-grade glue, limits on core gaps, a named face species and a stamp on the sheet. In the Dubai market marine ply is a loose phrase, and plenty of sheets sold under it are water-resistant commercial ply. Ask to see the stamp and the grade on the delivery note, not on the showroom sample.

The weaknesses are real. Plywood costs more, it is heavier, and every cut edge is an open door for water until it is banded and sealed. Cheap sheets carry voids you meet later with a screw. Face veneers can show slight waviness under gloss paint, which is why we rarely use plywood for a high-gloss door.

MDF, MR MDF and HMR MDF

MDF is wood fibre pressed into a uniform board. No grain, no voids, a face that machines cleanly and paints flat. For shaker rails, handleless J-profiles and spray-finished doors it is the better board, and it is what most of our painted fronts are cut from.

MR MDF has a water repellent added to the fibre and usually a green core. HMR MDF is the fire-retardant version, and the two are not the same thing, so read the label rather than the colour. Neither is waterproof. An unsealed MDF edge sitting in a leak will swell and stay swollen. Screw-holding is lower than plywood, so hinges and runners need correct pilot holes and sometimes a fixing plate.

Chipboard is the budget baseline behind most flat-pack kitchens. Plywood usually carries a premium over chipboard and MDF sits in between. Treat that as an ordering, not a price. Ask two suppliers to quote the identical door, hardware and layout, so the only variable left is the board.

That attention to detail is the theme across our Google reviews, which stand at 5 from 22.

The Dubai test: humidity, AC and the sink wall

A Dubai kitchen is a wet room with a hob in it. Humidity sits high for months, the AC runs cold, and any cold surface near a vent or a badly sealed window will condense. Water reaches a carcass three ways: a leaking trap, steam from a dishwasher, condensation running down a wall or a pipe.

Two spots tell you the truth about a kitchen: the base under the sink and the housing around the dishwasher. Both should be plywood with every cut edge sealed. A closed kitchen with a door and no extract suffers more than an open-plan one, because moisture has nowhere to go. Open-plan layouts in the DAMAC Hills 1 townhouses and apartments add a different pressure, since the island base is on show from the living room and the material choice is made in public.

Timing counts too. A carcass fitted before the AC is commissioned can sit in a humid shell for weeks. If the programme is tight, read how long a kitchen renovation takes in Dubai before you lock the board spec.

Where each board belongs in one kitchen

No single board wins a whole kitchen. Split it by zone and the choice becomes obvious.

ZoneBoard we would fitWhy
Base units either side of the sinkWBP or BS 1088 plywood, edges sealedTrap leaks and wet pans
Dishwasher and washer housingPlywoodSteam and heat cycling
Wall unitsMR MDF or plywoodDry zone, lighter loads

Doors and drawer frontsMDF or MR MDFMachines and sprays flat
Exposed back panels18mm, not 6mmStiffness and water path
Shelves over 900mm18mm plus stiffenerSag control

A fair quote names the board, the grade and the thickness for each zone rather than one line for cabinets. On the paperwork, check 18mm carcass panels, 1mm or 2mm ABS edge banding on exposed edges, a back panel grooved rather than stapled, shelf spans under about 900mm or a stiffener, and fixing points that suit the hardware going in.

Five questions worth putting to any supplier before you sign:

  • Which board, which grade and which brand, in which box?
  • What are the carcass thickness and the edge banding thickness?
  • How are cut edges at the sink and the dishwasher sealed?
  • Which hinges and runners, and are they rated for that board?
  • Is the back panel 6mm or 18mm, and is it grooved into the sides?

For a straight kitchen swap in an apartment, the gate is usually the building's fit-out approval and a contractor licensed for the work. Moving a sink, a wall or a gas line is a different conversation and needs sign-off before anyone cuts.

To price this properly, send photos of the sink wall, the dishwasher position and the window side of the room, a plan with measurements in millimetres, your ceiling height and the building name in DAMAC Hills 1. Frequently asked questions

Is plywood or MDF better for kitchen cabinets in Dubai?

Neither wins outright. Plywood suits base units near the sink, the dishwasher housing and anything against an external wall. MR or HMR MDF suits doors, tall boxes and painted panels. Ask for the spec zone by zone, not one board for the whole room.

Do I need BS 1088 marine ply in a Dubai kitchen?

Only the wet zones genuinely benefit. BS 1088 gives a certified glue line and limits on core gaps. Many sheets sold as marine ply are not certified, so ask for the stamp and grade on the delivery note. A sealed WBP ply carcass under the sink is a reasonable minimum.

What board thickness should kitchen cabinets be?

18mm for carcass panels, with a back panel of at least 6mm and thicker on exposed backs. Anything thinner sags on shelves over roughly 900mm. Put thickness and edge banding in writing on the quote.

Will MDF cabinets swell in Dubai humidity?

MDF swells at unsealed edges, not on the face. MR MDF with sealed edges and no standing water survives fine in a dry zone. Keep it out of the sink base and lift it off the floor on a plastic or aluminium plinth.

Does a plywood carcass cost more than MDF?

Usually yes. Plywood carries a premium over chipboard and MDF sits in between, but the total depends on doors, hardware and layout. Ask for two quotes with the same door and hardware so the only difference is the board.
